Every winter in my hometown of Lytham St Annes we’re treated to a spectacular display of migrating geese. Like many of you, I’ve been making the most of my daily walks over lockdown and have had the opportunity to watch the flock more closely.
They’ve really got teamwork off to a fine art. Here’s how:
Birds of a feather…
In the flock, there’s never a leader too tired to lead. The geese take turns at the front for maximum team efficiency; achieving a common goal – without any individual burning out.
When a goose gets sick or wounded, two geese drop out of formation and follow it down to help and protect it. They stay with it until it can fly again. Then, they launch out with another formation or catch up with the flock.
The lesson here is don’t be afraid to delegate or step back as and when you need to. You won’t relinquish power, you’ll be empowering others to pick up the reigns and make full use of their own unique skills. Bold and effective leaders aren’t afraid to lean on others and tap-into their teammates’ strengths occasionally. Ultimately, you’re stronger together.
Minimising the drag
By flying in a V formation the geese minimise drag in the air flow and increase their range by over 70%. They work together so they can go further, faster, more efficiently.
The lesson here is to optimise your systems for incredible results.If you can get your team working perfectly together, just imagine how much further your business could go, without stalling. Think about the difference this would make to your efficiency and the money you’ll earn.
Honk if you want to go faster
Ever wondered why the geese are making so much noise as they fly? They’re talking to each other. Well maybe not talking, but certainly communicating and encouraging each other along. This is mission-critical as they navigate up to 3000 miles on their winter migration.
The lesson? Communicate effectively for team success. Keep talking to each other. Especially in this new realm of remote working. Create an open, honest and transparent team culture where employees AND leaders feel confident to air their views. Not only will you get ahead of issues more quickly but you’ll also find solutions quickly too.
Staying on track with core values and mission
The geese use the same route year after year. Their migration route never varies. Even when the flock members change, the young learn the route from their parents. In the spring they will go back to the spot where they were born.
The lesson here is to stay true to your core values and mission. Strategies, tactics, and products may change in order for your business to remain agile, but great companies always stick to their core purpose and values, and preserve them with vigour.
